BMW Championship

Stop the Reign?

The third round of the FedExCup Playoffs tees off at the BMW Championship — that is, if the rain will allow for a golf tournament this weekend. Thursday’s opening round was washed away by over two inches of rain, with another 1-3 inches expected.

“We’ve got a mess out there,” said tournament director Slugger White. “Might be as bad as I’ve seen in a long, long time.”

As soon as the rain subsides, the 7,456-yard, Par-71 course at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., will host the high-stakes event with a $7 million purse and $1.26 million winner’s share.

After starting with 144 players at The Barclays, then cutting down the field to 120 for the Deutsche Bank Championship, there will be only 70 golfers at the BMW Championship, before just 30 compete at The TOUR Championship (Sept. 25-28).

There may be 70 players on the course, but there is only one man to beat — Vijay Singh. The 45-year-old Fijian carries a 12,225-point lead over Spain’s Sergio Garcia in the FedExCup standings. Singh has two wins in two playoff events thus far, most recently with a record-setting 22-under-par performance at TPC Boston. But Vijay is not dwelling on the past, he’s focused on winning the FedExCup and cashing the $10 million check.

“You don’t think about what you’ve done last week. If you start thinking about what you’ve done last week, then you’ve got issues,” said Singh.

“I’m just really worried about this week. I’m going to go out there and just play as hard as I can. If I win, it’ll be great. If I don’t win, hopefully I can get enough points to clear it up. But my main focus is to go out there and play well.”

Singh will be competing with eight former BMW Championship winners — Jim Furyk (2005), Steve Stricker (1996), Robert Allenby (2000), Trevor Immelman (2006), Billy Mayfair (1995), Jerry Kelly (2002), Scott Verplank (1995) and Stephen Ames (2004).

But with two playoff wins under his belt, Singh is more concerned with the top of the FedExCup standings, namely Garcia and Canada’s Mike Weir, who jumped from 18th to 3rd on the strength of a pair of Top-10 finishes in the first two playoff tournaments.

Top 15, FedExCup standings:

1. Vijay Singh, Fiji
2. Sergio Garcia, Spain

Last year, Tiger Woods won the BMW Championship, shooting a 22-under-par 262 for a two-shot victory over Aaron Baddeley. But, as was the case with the PGA Championship and the FedExCup crown, Tiger will not be able to defend his title at the BMW due to the ongoing rehabilitation of his injured left knee.

The BMW Championship will be televised by GOLF Channel (2:00-6:00 p.m. ET) on Friday before NBC takes over weather updates on Saturday (12:00-3:30 p.m. ET) and Sunday (2:00-6:00 p.m. ET).
